October is national disability awareness month in America. I personally think it is something that should be celebrated worldwide!

Some of you may know, others may not, that I live with a disability. I had an accident almost four years ago. The repercussions of the accident caused me to lose my sight because of this I then became registered as severely sight impaired (Blind).

I was plunged into darkness.

I had to learn how to live my life in a totally different way.

Awareness is a powerful thing. I think that this month of awareness could challenge many stereotypes of disabled individuals that I have experienced first hand.

This is a definition of the term disability.

The definition is very black and white. Whereas in reality, those who have a disability have expertise, skills, and creativity on a wonderfully colourful scale.

Having a disability doesn’t define you. If you are an employer especially, I would like you to think about how you support those with a disability within the workplace.

My disability doesn’t define me.

It never has and I encourage you to not define those with a disability either. You never know who will surprise you. I know amazing freelancers and work with a large network of individuals with a disability who work to the highest level of professionalism and who are no different from their peers in their sectors.

An article within The Sentinel recently showcased me and my business. The article highlights some of the ways I live with my disability and also showcases how I haven’t let it stop me. This has played a key part in my life, I consistently gave myself goals to work towards. These small successes kept me on track to achieve the larger goal of creating my business, and I have been lucky enough to meet some of the most motivational and supportive individuals along the way.

A challenge for you!

I challenge you to not fall for a stereotype and educate yourself. If you would like to ask any questions then don’t hesitate to contact me! A question is never a stupid question. I would be happy to explain how I run my business if you are curious!
