Is Motivation A Myth?
Motivation is a word that is often thrown around within the business world, but does it really exist?
I often sit staring at my computer screen, wondering where my motivation has gone. This started to happen regularly at one time, to the point where I was being more unproductive than productive. This started thoughts regarding my capability started to seep into my subconscious. It got the point I was starting to doubt myself.
So, where had my motivation gone?
Motivation is a reason, or reasons, for acting or behaving in a certain way. So, in essence, my motivation has disappeared because I have lost my reason or reasons for behaving in a certain way. What a strange idea. I ended up thinking about other reasons as to why at that moment I may not be capable of completing a task or vacuuming the house. So, is motivation a myth?
The idea that motivation is stronger than other outside influences is highly doubtful.
Is motivation stronger than my own internal monologue, or the resistance I had created against the task at hand?
This began a process of breaking down why I felt unmotivated, but in reality, there were many other factors that were affecting my ability to complete the task than just my motivation, because my reasons for wanting to complete the task were the same.
I hadn’t slept properly the night before, I had a slight cold that I couldn’t get rid of, I had a hundred household chores that I needed to complete before I felt that the space I was working in was correct. I then realised that motivation isn’t all its cracked up to be, what was more important was the ability to stay focused and have coping mechanisms to deal with this dip in my normal productivity.
In reality, it’s ok to not have any motivation. You just need to know how to deal with it.
Actions speak louder than words. This means that when you feel you need more motivation you just need to start to take action. Go for a walk, eat some vegetables, drink some water, take a break. This will give you the ability to shake those negative feelings!
When you start to recognise that you have the ability and power to keep progressing without the need for motivation you will be more productive. You will also feel less guilty that you don’t feel the motivation that you sense you should.
Another way you can boost your productivity and in turn, motivation to continue is to set realistic goals. These goals should truly drive you to achieve. It will give you an internal roadmap that is linked to an end achievement that you can devise things like timelines to stay on track, small sizeable mini goals, a sense of urgency to complete.
These are actually more powerful than motivation.
